Who enjoys some classic Halo?

So I've been thinking, Halo MCC is on PC and also has a server browser these days.

What if we were to organise a DTK event outside of CS by jumping into the inherently fun sandbox of Halo CE, 2, 3? or maybe even Reach and 4 if you're one of the weirdos that likes those two 😛

We'd need an event manager to host the games of course and we'd probably have to communicate through Discord but I have no doubts that if we had the numbers we'd all have an absolute blast!

Halo was always an epic System Link experience back in the day, in a way this would be similar to that only with everyone using their own screen and a little bit of distance haha

Ha, well I'm happy to give it a go! I'm going to have a look into how it all works.

We can give it a run tonight if you guys are keen! Otherwise we could do Friday the 13th, or maybe even both!

I feel like a reasonable time may be around 19:00 Sydney time.

The server name will be "[DTK] Fun with a Ring!"


It will be a good idea for us to mute the in game comms and use a voice channel in the DTK Discord, this will help between games.



A few things to note!

I can't make a server with a password so we will come across randoms here and there, that's not necessarily a bad thing as it will keep the numbers up, I will be able to kick them to make room if need be due to the 16 player limit. If the server is full just give me a yell on the DTK Discord voice channel that I'll be in and I can kick a non member to make space.
If I end up losing connection at some point the server will continue running, however another player will automatically gain the role of "leader" and take on the responsibility of handling potential riff raff etc. You can pass it on to someone else or give it back to me upon my return by clicking on the "player" icon in the top right portion of the pause screen then clicking on the desired player to bring up some options.

To be honest the whole "server browser" system feels more like a modified party system, it's very limited but should do the job.



The Game

After reviewing the poll I posted earlier the winner surprisingly ended up being Halo CE with Halo 3 coming in at a close second!

With that worked out I feel it would be great to start out with some Halo CE games for around an hour then move on to halo 3 for an hour depending on how people feel. If people are still keen and hanging around after that we can wing it and move back to CE, continue with Halo 3 or move on to something else!

This is where Discord will be handy as a tool to talk through what people are keen for as things move along.

I'm going to focus on game modes other than DM and TDM. So expect to see modes such as Flag Assault, Oddball, Phantoms and maybe even a cheeky Halo CE Race!

Yeah it was a little bit of a fustercluck, for the record I blame 343i.

I don't understand how their idea of a game install is you installing the MCC via steam and then expecting you to know to go into the in game gameplay settings menu to pick the games you want to install individually after already installing the main game through Steam...
Then you have the hilariously bad server system that ends the server after every round forcing you to restart it and have everyone rejoin manually... 🤣


I had to help Russian Insurance and WalkerBoh get in by using using Steam voice calls before we moved over to Discord which in itself had issues because the DTK Discord server invite kept coming up as invalid... Untill it didn't???

Not to mention the in game voice system didn't work... At all... So without Discord you'd have to type to communicate... hahaha

The whole situation gave me a whole new appreciation for the classic server browser system with the option to run a dedicated server yourself. Something all PC FPS games should have!

Regardless we managed to play a few games of Combat Evolved and had some fun, we'll try again next Friday. I'm going to have to make a new thread with instructions on how to set up MCC in the meantime I think because holy ♥♥♥♥ that was a mess...

It was a great effort Phantom and I appreciate the time you took to get it going. Cheers for the help getting in also. Was fun while actually playing, but yeah the wait while you had to restart after each game was a bit of a damper. But keen to go again.

Yeah i got a couple of minutes gameplay, was annoyed by getting blatted nonstop and moving at glacier speed, I might have to brush up on gameplay settings. Anyone know how to change your ingame user name?
