I've been having massive lag problems for the last month, CSS was working fine then just suddenly my fps started veering all over the place. It isn't restricted to DtK so it isn't a server issue. Any ideas on what can be causing it? The game will clunk along reasonably enough until someone shoots at me then it's abysmal, it just staggers and I'm dead and respawned before I even hear the shots. It's just unplayable.


If any tech types want to earn $20 to dial in and have a poke around my laptop for ten minutes to try and sort it out then I'm happy to put my hand in my wallet. Any longer than that and it'll have to wait until payday.



Tech is not my skill set so please put any ideas in language that a 42 year-old welder can understand. Y'know, idiot speak

It's a laptop right?

-Check the temperatures and make sure it's not throttling.
-Make sure all background programs are closed
-Back up your config and start fresh.
-Try cl_forcepreload 1 in Console. It will store the files in RAM, rather than streaming from the HDD. Useful for old clunkers.

It may sound like an effort, but if you completely uninstall CS:S and start off with a fresh install it'll help out a lot.

I recently did this and saw a massive performance increase on all servers. Not sure why CS:S is like this but it's useful if all else fails.

Is it just Cs Source or are all of your fps games and the like playing up? is it just while playing online? try ccs in single player Bot mode if its the same then its a pc problem if it plays fine its a network/interweb problem. let us know

Yeah, same problem. I don't generally play other fps games (not much of a gamer tbh) but will fire one up and have a look.


<edit> Same issue on Half Life Ep.1 as well.




<edit 2> cl_forcepreload 1 seems to have smoothed it out a hell of a lot, still a bit jerky on Office but another player was talking about server lag so we'll see how that goes. Thanks - I hope this is a permanent cure.

Might try reinstalling css myself too, also playing on a laptop with worse frame rate than usual. If all else fails, maybe your welding gun can fix it.

The thought of taking an oxy fuel torch to the laptop had actually crossed my mind, now that you mention it.

one thing i've noticed a lot is if you're running on windows 10, turning off windows (fullscreen optimizations) can help, if you don't know how to do that let me know

MIG only, like all proper red-blooded men, building chaser bins and spreaders. Google Coolamon Steelworks.


The main workhorse is a Weldmatic 356, pretty versatile but has a crap duty cycle. Sometimes I use a BOC Smootharc 350r, which is one step away from junk, and if when I can wrestle it away from the apprentices I'll use a Migatronic 385XS, which is a good bit of kit. And there's the usual over the shoulder stick welder for when the guys in assembly point out the bit we missed.


Feel free to elevate me to whichever position in your pantheon of blue collar heroes you prefer.

I kinda wanna know what the problem is because some reason my laptop freezes randomly when i play games, i thought it was bottleneck so i ordered more ram but let us know what the problem was.
