    Lightbulb DtK Custom Complete GUI

    Hey everyone,

    I know I'm not apart of the DtK Dev team, however I've recently begun configuring with the CS:S source files to learn how to create custom content.

    Initially I intended to create a personal custom HUD to be used primarily for the Zombie Escape gamemode; which involved altering the HUD Health and Timer to accommodate for large digit values that cannot be properly displayed on the default HUD (e.g. Health with 5 digits or a Time with 4 digits). This then lead to me rearranging the HUD completely and creating my own unique creation which modifies the: Font, Colours, HUD Element positions, Size of HUD elements, Custom HUD Icons, HUD backgrounds, Flash animations and Support for multiplayer plugins.

    Whilst playing #3 Office DM today I had the brilliant idea of not only completing my HUD; but creating a Complete GUI that is thematically designed for the DtK community, which will feature a main menu screen with the DtK logo. I haven't fully decided what it will look like or what additional features I would like to implement into the GUI so I thought making a post and gaining feedback from the community will be the best solution for scaffolding how the final product will turn out.

    For the time being there are still some minor adjustments I'd like to make before I release the standalone HUD and begin work on the Complete GUI aspects. So once I'm happy with how the standalone HUD looks I will release it to you guys to use and have fun with. This will also be a great opportunity for feedback, because the current state of the HUD is in no way shape or form confirmed to be how the final product will appear.


    Here are some screenshots of how the HUD appears at the moment:

    HUD in default state


    Timer with 4 digits and Ammo with 4 digits


    Health with 5 digits


    Health flashes and turns blue permanently when damaged


    Timer flashes red when time runs out, Health flashes red and fades in and out similarly

    I love the colours and the set out. The colours stand out great, especially when you need to only have a quick glimpse at them when your in battle.

    Just one question> Will the rest stay that greyish colour?

    And also well done to you for taking your time out and doing this!

    The remaining HUD elements are subject to change and are not confirmed to remain grey. If you guys would prefer a different colour and/or colours, I'd be more than happy to alter the HUD colours to accommodate for your requests. I will provide screenshots when necessary.

    Also it should be noted that from what I'm aware; it's not possible to change one HUD element (e.g. Health, Armour, Timer, Budget), to have it's own unique and individual colour. The way Valve created the HUD is by combining the HUD element colours and the only way that I was able to modify the: Health, Timer and Budget colours is by manipulating the flash animations to display a specific colour. However I'm sure there's a workaround that I'll figure out soon that'll sort this issue out.

    Anytime Krusty!

    The grey hud colour actually doesnt look that bad now having a good look back to see your screenshots again. I was worried at some of the backgrounds on some of the servers that the colour contrast may have collided but seeing your screenshots put against another greyish colour background, the colours dont clash at all with each other and you can still read the numbers quite well.

    Hey guys, great news!

    The first version of the HUD is now available for testing and I hope you all enjoy it!

    Since I initially posted on this thread I have rearranged the: C4, Shopping Cart, Hostage Zone and Defuse Kit icons, along with re-colouring them and adding individual backgrounds to all of them.

    For the time being these are temporary aspects that I intend to completely redesign from the ground up with unique icon designs, but for the moment they are place holders until I create more detailed icons.

    Installation Instructions:
    • Locate your Counter-Strike: Source Directory -> Generally C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Source\cstrike

    • Go inside the folder named 'custom' and create a new folder called 'custom_hud' for example.

    • Copy the files contained within the zip file (resource, scripts and sound), then paste them inside the newly created folder titled 'custom_hud'.

    • Fire up Counter-Strike Source and enjoy!

    Please leave some feedback as it's greatly appreciated and it will help me improve and fine tune the HUD over time.

    hmm, any reason they're all different colours? (health, money, side icons) just for some more continuity, imo looks a lil out of whack being like a rainbow.

    Good question highpr.

    Yes, Initially this HUD was intended for personal use so I created it using colours that I thought would look nice. In comparison to the original HUD; this has a more diverse colour range because I simply had the ability to change the colours of various HUD elements as I desired. Changing the colours of each individual HUD element can be a pain as there are lines of code that change all the main HUD elements (Armour, Budget, Timer and Ammo), to a specified colour, but don't change the Health colour simultaneously. This then automatically lead to the health having its own unique colour to stand out and in my opinion; look nice in comparison to the rest of the HUD. However changing the Health colours somehow affects the colour of the Budget, which then must be manually altered similarly, giving it its own unique colour (unless you want all the HUD element colours the same).

    So at this stage, this meant that all HUD elements aside from Health and Budget would appear to have the same colour. Other HUD elements such as: Flash Colours, Weapon Select Colours, Text Colours, Scheme Specific Colours (e.g. HudIcon_Green -> green colour associated with Shopping Cart, C4, Defuse Kit, Hostage Zone), and Menu Colours all have their own unique lines of code that determine their initial colour, their transparency and in some cases their secondary colours. So I thought, "Why only have one bland colour for all my HUD elements if I have the ability to change them however I want?". At this point in time I have begun arranging associated colours for different HUD elements which I'll list bellow:

    • Scheme Specific Colours & Weapon/Equipment pickup - Dodger Blue

    • Weapon Selection Colours (top of your screen) - Violet

    • Health - (Primary: Violet), (Flash: Invisible), (Secondary: Dodger Blue), (Tertiary: Red)

    • Main HUD elements - Gray

    • Budget - (Primary: Magenta), (Secondary: Red and Green)

    It was definitely a good question and I'm thankful for the criticism as I can understand why it would look goofy, but the HUD was initially created for what I wanted it to look like, not what others desired. So as I've mentioned earlier; the HUD is most definitely subject to change and there is no guarantee that any of what you currently see will remain in the final version of the HUD once the Complete GUI has been released. There are still various things I'd like to edit (e.g. Fonts of chat, Chat HUD dimensions, Scoreboard elements, Fonts of prompt messages and multiplayer plugins) and so on. But for now I'm focusing on what I've currently created and the changes I'll need to make based on direct feedback from those who use the HUD. If enough feedback suggests that the colours shouldn't be so 'rainbow-like' then I'll definitely alter the HUD, because this entire GUI is intended to appeal to the DtK community and the changes should reflect what the community desires.

    I apologise for the delays everyone, been busy recently and haven't had a lot of spare time to invest in finishing this off, but I will start making some edits now. I have made some changes since last release (e.g. Center Text font change), but I'd like to make some more changes before I release the next version.

    If you have any suggestions please let me know (fonts, color schemes, hud element placements, scoreboard edits, main menu edits, replacing the rectangles in the hud with default hud backgrounds, etc)

    Thanks for the suggestions Yogi! I do plan on moving all of the HUD Scheme Icons to the lower area of the HUD so the player doesn't have to worry about the icons blocking their POV, although I do worry that on lower resolutions it may collide with the rectangles either side of the gap in the middle. We'll see how things go and if worst comes to worst; I can figure out a workaround.

    Also I was thinking of making the HP have just 1 colour instead of the 2 that are currently there (dodger blue and purple). Let me know if you'd prefer purple or dodger blue as the colour for the health. The icon for the health will also be customised a bit as I've taken it from another HUD's ttf file, so I'd like mine to be unique.

    No worries Krusty anytime, your doing a fantastic job with it all!!
    I do like the HP being the 2 different colours as they are now, its easier to tell when your in game between you having full/maximum health and when your low on health. Also what other icons do you mean to move to the bottom of screen? Are these the bomb difusals kits? And extras like these as such?

    You can only try with moving all the boxes down to the bottom and maybe giving it a test run to see if they are all compatable with one another and also fit along the bottom together.
    I cant wait to see what you HP icon will look like!! Or is this one just for you?
