    The Death of GG4

    Hello everyone,

    What has happened to GG4?....Has it died a slow death?

    I ask because everytime I go to play there recently, there is only a handful of players - and none of the usual crew.

    I'm the first to admit that I am not playing as much as I used to either but where is everyone else?

    And why have they left?

    And what is going to be done to attract players back?

    Or do we start writing the obituary???

    How does the staff team feel about:

    limiting the pinion ad to solely the warmup round, since it delaying joining by 20 seconds halfway through a round is a frustrating thing to have happen. alternatively, don't show an ad until after the match is finished, before the server switches maps.
    automatically rotating 5 maps each month, based either on admin discretion or user feedback (or both).

    The issue there mate is that the plugin comes directly from them. The plugin has no way of knowing it's warmup round during the connecting phase. But as i mentioned earlier, we are happy to increase the warm up round time so that players whose MOTD loads slower aren't at a disadvantage as everyone will have the MOTD closed by the time the gg rounds gets into progress.

    Not concerned about MOTD closing before the round starts, since the warmup time was extended to stop that was happening, which was great. People who join halfway through a round have to wait 20 seconds or so as it currently stands before they can start playing, which is a relatively long time on a server as fast paced as GGDM. I feel like that's a fairly big dealbreaker for a lot of people, who just rotate to another server.

    We don't really control when the AD shows, it is set up the way it currently is by pinion themselves nor is there a option to make it show at the end.

    Personally I think it would be worth seeing if the providers of the plugin would be willing to alter it so that it can play at the end of the map. For players who play multiple maps generally the end of a fast paced map is a moment to relax and refocus yourself before playing the next map/go get a drink/go to the toilet. In all 3 instances it is unlikely that person will disconnect from the server. As for players disconnecting on map end, could the plugin disable the windows/alt tab/tilde keys?

    What heretostalk suggested was one of the initial suggestions we sent forward to pinion when it changed its model to the current one and the response if very similar to what i said.


    Pinion does kinda have it good with Valve and I seen Valve fixing issues Pinion brings up. Although I am not sure sure to what extent Valve will comply with them in regards to changes to the game. If the MOTD window could be re-sized much smaller and positioned at the top right or left of the hud , how many would have an issue with that?



    As far as altering the plugin goes, i could code in changes if I wanted to but when we became a pinion 'partner' so to speak , we pretty much agreed to their terms and conditions. We agreed that we will use the Pinion content/plugin as it is. Any changes we make will probably lead to termination of our 'agreement'.

    Just a small update on the above; I just had a little chat with one of the Pinion reps we usually deal with and brought up the above suggestion again. He has told me to contact him in a few days if he doesn't do it 1st, they will discuss it in their team meeting tomorrow. There is a small chance, there might be a solution to this. (being able to show the ads at the end of the map on GG4)

    This could go either way but yeah i just wanted to let you guys know that both parties involved here do care.

    The ads are fine to me... It just isn't fun playing with bots +/- 1-3 players. Everyone needs to get their asses back to GG4!

    So saddening to see the numbers on GG4 nowdays, I connected on the weekend to catch up with the crew to find not a soul online. As for the pinion nobody can deny it has had a negative effect on the server.. I can't stand it myself but only put up with it because I like the server so much. Bit disappointed in the way you're reacting Squal, Iz has the server's best interests at heart go easy mate.

    It is good that Pinion are not "closed" in regard to changing aspects of the product they use to generate advertising. I personally do think that having the ads play on map end and disabling the ability to leave the server for that duration is the best compromise between still having players willing to play on the server and generating income. The only way this couldn't really work is if people start dropping their net connection (physically unplug) at map end and reconnecting it but even that is doubtful to occur as it generally takes longer to reconnect to the internet and server than the add takes to play.

    And yeah cmon Iz, you are not one to let someting like this cause you to leave.

    Yes, they are receptive to suggestions in certain regards. At the same time they are limited to what suggestions they can pick and do something about by the restrictions of game design - the MOTD window has been like that since the early CS versions. (although there was only support for basic html back in the day)

    I got a response from pinion this morning and they have added it as a feature request for their developer to look into. He mentioned it won't be in the next version that will be coming out soon but possibly in the version that comes after that. This 'might' is a better option than 'never'.


    Feature Request:

    Ability to only open the MOTD on round end with no initial on join MOTD. For game modes such as gungame etc.

    Well there is something - I wonder if this will need to involve the creators of the Gungame mod as the Pinion plugin will need to know how to determine that the map has ended (timeout or someone wins) unless the idea is to have something else call the MOTD at map end and the Pinion plugin just reacts to that (it's been a good 3 years or more since I built a GG server and the plugins I used didnt have custom code and were already compatible with each other). Additionally things like map votes and admins changing maps need to be considered as well if something like this goes ahead. It doesn't take much digging and thought to realise the difficulties in managing such changes over multiple servers running multiple mods that may or may not be compatible with each other following said changes.

    No it will not involve the gungame plugin at all. A source engine event is triggered when the map ends , this could be the timelimit set by the servers, the kill limit on servers like Dust2,etc. So they will basically hook that event and then display the MOTD whenever it triggers.

    We might have to lose the GG MOTD itself that shows the winner at the end but it is too early to worry about that.

    Nice to see they are open to alternatives.

    The reason it died for me was purely because of the wait, sometimes the ad didn't even work, sometimes the stupid pot of gold didn't work. It was just annoying, and I don't think it counted as a view because nothing would play.
    A certain admin told me if I didn't like it then I should go play on another server, and so I did, I've been playing on various GG servers.

    I don't play on any of the DtK servers anymore and I prefer CS:GO over source now, so with the time I am available to play, I choose GO over source.
    Thankfully the CS:GO servers don't have the ad either so win/win.

    I like the server too and I've been trying to keep it alive, but when I invite people the common response is "no thanks, it's laggy / the ads suck".

    And honestly, life's been stressful lately and the rare chances I actually get to play, the last thing I want to do is sit around listening to ads and struggling with teleporting players.

    To be more OT, I played GG4 last night and found it pretty fun. I will admit the advert at the start is frustrating, but it also came to fruition that perhaps it is my end that isnt functioning correctly.
    DtK faces the peril that we have expanded our servers to accommodate what people like to play, which is great, but our playerbase hasnt expanded with our expansion of selection. While there were less than 14 people in the server, I still had a lot of fun .

    When i play sometimes there is only one other player...however i keep inviting people on my frnds list and tell others to do as well..we end up getting about 10-15 players...

    That being said round finishes next map...15 people in spec...that soon reduces to 5 due to the enormous ad wait

    i dont really see how adding sticky nades or throwing knives is going to fix the nos....while its something new and good to trial it aint really going to stop leaving next round when the map changes and you have to wait
