    lag is killing the server

    Hi Guys,

Here is a couple of issues i noticed the warmup times have been extended (fixed the issue of the round beginning before people can get in but....) due to the endless wait at the start with the pinion pot off...but the lag continues far into the round and its literally unplayable, it feels like my graphics card is dying while i m still getting about 280fps,i have tried other servers including dtk dd2, the lag only seems to last a few seconds after the start and then its normal

i know the pinion is controlled externally but this is definitely affecting the servers and its nos, its just my opinion anyways and it really needs to be looked at

For me its a good thirty seconds at the start to wait for the ad and then it just lags far too much...literally unplayable

With the rotation of maps can we please get rid of missile and iceworld, Thanks, although its a great map you need a min of 20-25 people, bring back lego worldv2 and shotty snow

i know all these issues cannot be fixed overnight but i just wanted to put it out there so it gets addressed, thanks for the help

    Cheers

    DeL

This is the report form that I told you twice about on steam just before.

Form filled and submitted. Played a bit of GG4 on Friday night, very choppy for the first 5-10 mins of game play after the pinion pot/add have played then game play starts to be normal after that during each map.

Most of the lag issue stems from the recent Steampipe update not the MOTD. CPU/Memory usage is in some cases 2-3 times more after the update on both servers and client side resulting in jitter and fps drops.

There was a pre-release build from Valve which apparently addressed the above issue and i tested this by applying the new build on our servers earlier this week (hence the unscheduled maintenance). The new build did show better performance with cpu/memory usage reduced from 300% to what we usually got before the Steampipe update. However as this pre-release build isn't supported by Sourcemod, it was crashing the servers and thus I reverted back to the previous build.

Good news is that the pre-relaese build has now been pushed as a stable optional update. There are still a few reports of certain addons not being compatible but as soon as these issues are resolved, I will update the servers to the new build. This shouldn't be too far off, maybe early tomorrow morning or the next 3 days.

    Cheers

Interesting you say that because the GG4 server was the only one I experienced this issue on (the one I reported). To be fair I did not try other DtK servers, but other servers outside the community were fine.

Different servers run different set of addons/plugins and run on different hardware as well. You can't really compare servers in the way you did unless they are running a stock css server and run the same server hardware.

The jitters we see mentioned in the lag reports are consistent across all servers after the steampipe update.

So the steampipe update is not compulsory? (I guess it seems that way if you are able to roll back). If it was, then it would likely point to a specific plugin/s not being compatible seeing as other servers were fine, whch was my line of reasoning (presuming the servers that were fine are running the same steampipe update) but as you say they may not be if it's not compulsory or may have hardware capable of coping with the drastic increase in load anyway.

    Just an update on this;

All servers were updated to an optional build as mentioned above early last week. This build does seem to perform better and is a good improvement. While things are definitely better now, the issue isn't completely resolved. I've been in contact with a Valve employee and he has been quite helpful thus far, he asked for some server side data to help them and mentioned fixing this issue is one of their higher priorities at the moment.

With the issue of FPS drops during MOTD load, I implemented a fix from the developers on Dust2 and GG4 yesterday and all other servers received the fix today.

If you still encounter any siginicant lag or fps drops please report it here: http://www.dying2kill.com.au/misc.php?do=form&fid=17

    Cheers
