    Telstra's new attack on pirates

This is Telstra's new way of taking down pirates. Copy pasta from here

Heads-up all you naughty pirates: Telstra is coming for you. It’s coming to slow down your P2P traffic and analyse your traffic to stop rampant online piracy.

Piracy has always been difficult for ISPs; you only need to look at the iiTrial to understand that. To combat pirated material traversing Telstra’s pipes, the telco has announced plans to throttle peer-to-peer (P2P) network traffic while also inspecting network traffic for pirated material.

It’s only a trial at this stage for a group of customers in Victoria (of which they can opt out), but Telstra is investigating the viability of the two anti-piracy methods to see if it would work across the whole network.

The telco said on its Exchange blog this morning that the packet inspection technology wouldn’t be able to tell what was actually being downloaded, it would only be able to track the “signature” of the traffic to finger it as infringing material.

The technology being used looks at characteristics of the data packet to identify the type of the traffic present. Any inspection that takes place is used only to identify the signature of the traffic; it does not identify the content (eg whether this is a movie, the title or any other details).

This trial does not involve any monitoring or tracking of the sites visited by our customers, and the trial’s findings, including customer feedback, will be collected in accordance with our Privacy Statement.
Telstra will also shape identified peer-to-peer content to slow down pirates:

One of the variety of options being examined under this trial is the shaping of specific services (including some peer to peer (P2P) services) in certain circumstances, to determine what impact this has on total overall customer experience of time critical experiences for real time entertainment.
Victorian customers involved in the trial are being contacted about their involvement.

I dont actually have a problem buying things from the shops, dvd's, songs etc BUT..... They are way to expensive, why buy a cd for $30 when it only has 1 song on it you like.... :|

Same as Movies, they want 30-50 bucks for a new release... is bs as they would cost no more than about 30c to make 20c for delivery and the rest is profit to pay actors 100million a year... :|

If the packet sniffing program can read whether downloads are coming from an infringing signature than I have no doubt that there is plans for them to find out what the data is.
Typical enforcers, one day they will understand (Probably not)

    PS:

In response to people looking for alternatives to renting movies, I bought a device called a WDTV Live(Connects to my tv via HDMI) that allows me to stream Netflix (Through a US VPN) and I have no issues paying $8 for it a month for unlimited movies. The same thing can be done with just a computer if you don't want to have it on your tv.

so what if you were torrenting legally? i mean you can get games and the like by torrents now as its more popular, i did read this earlier on. if they throttle my network because im either downloading too much or downloading from peers then i suppose i will move to a country where the equivalent of dial up in Australia is as fast as ADSL2+

    EDIT: @VLAD, im guessing VPN?

if telstra does it it wouldnt matter what ISP you are with, most of the lines are controlled by telstra so everyone would be affected (i would imagine anyway)

First time in my life I've ever said this, but thank ♥♥♥♥ I'm not with Telstra.

As MDNK stated this might depend on your exchange, luckily for me I live in an area where my ISP has bought into the exchange.

    Espe 1

    Telstra 0

EDIT: Wouldn't this just be like going with another ISP who doesn't have any ports at an exchange near you and you get shit dl speed because it's trying to connect to an exchange 100's of kms away.

Telstra own most of the towers for mobiles and other such things also the power lines for everything else..
Telstra lets Optus and other providers rent them. So all in all if this does pass you're all ♥♥♥♥ed unless you know what you're doing. :P
I'll just use IRC relay from now on and get direct downloads Kthanks.

Telstra owns all lines in Australia... or most...

If this goes through, they will block it no matter what ISP.. Don't hold me on that, I'm not 100% sure about that, but yer. They own most lines in aus, optus rents the lines off them :P
