Hi all,

Here is a link to an article I was reading on sexual harassment of girls and women in online gaming:

While I know much of what we do is in good fun and is just trash talk, we also need to be careful that we do not cross the line and drive the opposite sex away because we are offensive.

I know that some of you out there will think that this is ridiculous and that the girls/women need to harden up but the reality is that we wouldn't say the things in the real world that we do in the virtual one.

We want girls to be gamers just as much as the guys and if they say that we - guys - are going too far then we need to listen and back off as required.

Please understand that I'm not pointing the finger at anyone but have raised this as a general thought.

..I think the article has a lot of truth behind it... as a girl gamer myself i have had quite a lot of abuse.. The moment yu do something wrong yu get harsh words thrown at yu.. Although i just leave the server if its bothering me sometimes yu just cant get away from it.. As Flex said i dnt take being told to get back in the kitchen a sexist thing to say.. I love to cook and love making a good meal for my man.. Pimp would tell me to get back in the kitchen everyday if he could lol.. I got abuse from one guy off dtk for ages and it got to the point where as soon as he logged into the server i was on i actually felt sick.. However now we are really close friends and hes learnt to stop.. I think if anything people just need to be more aware that what they say could hurt people..

I'm not going to bother reading the article because it's bound to be a load of rubbish. Here's what i think.
It's the internet, guys abuse other guys for any number of reasons, if a girl decides to play games, why should they be exempt from abuse?

Most girls on servers that I play get sucked up to more than they get abused anyway. I couldn't give a shit if someone is a girl or not, I don't play these games to socialise, and I'm not going to treat a girl different, she's here for the same reason as me.

Theres 30 minutes until the footy, so if anyone is offended by this comment, please don't keep it to yourself, let me know

haha i got called a sh*t c*nt once too by a female player for no reason at all....i didnt really bother...kept knifing her even more...then she complained i was targetting her and one of the admins was like stop targetting her i was like LOL...srsly

i got to agree with flex to an extent this is not a socialising podium......there are some nice people on here..and its good...but sometimes everything can change just beacuse some female said something without even a demo...so like flex said its gaming .....and i know there are rules in DTK for this but if it applies to a particular person it should apply to everyone

I'm lucky enough to have had pretty good experiences so far whilst gaming. I've had a few insults hurled my way, like, 'shut the f*** up you f***ing dirty s***. To be honest, I really really hate these insults and they make me feel rubbish. I know its the internet and all, but it still really hurts my feelings. When things like that happen though, I generally just leave the server, because I feel really uncomfortable playing there.

I must say though, I've never had any DTK members say anything of that nature to me, it's always other people on the servers. All of the DTK members have been absolutely lovely to me and make me feel really comfortable and welcome.

I know I'm always going to cop some sort of crap from people because I'm a girl gamer, but gender is really no excuse to say nasty things to people. Just think twice before you say things that may be hurtful.

As for the DTK community, thankyou for being lovely!

First of all, picking on anyone is just BS. And relying on the excuse of 'its the internet' is even more BS. I dont care what gender you are.

Secondly, if gaming conditions arent so bad for girls, then maybe more would play, and perhaps a 'girl gamer' would become less of an anomaly. While some of you havent had a girlfriend yet, let me assure you that dating a girl gamer is freakin awesome. She never nags about my gaming habits, and likes joining in. I suggest that if you guys want to date a gamer girl at some stage in your lives, you better be nice to them. I mean heck- look at Pimpact and Alexis. Their homes are not physically connected by land but they have an awesome time together. Sometimes things are as simple as that.

Sometimes you have to think about the person on the opposite end. Do they come to the server to be insulted by you? No. Unless I am on the server with Rowdy. Then he better prepare for a verbal arse kicking.

BUT BACK TO THE POINT! Why anyone feels compelled to be sexist to girl gamers, or anyone, is beyond me. If you knew a girl in real life who played games, you wouldnt say that crap and you would be wishing you were dating her. Dont be a pretender.

Lol.. seriously? Everyone abuses people on games, whether it be because they are getting owned, or someone is being annoying, it's there, and it will always be there. If girls expect special treatment then in MY opinion they can f off.

There isn't a shortage of girl gamers because they get abused online, it's because games don't appeal to women. Girls don't play on a server and then go to their friends and say "omg the guys are so nice on DTK dust 2, use should all buy the game and play".. Honestly, thats just stupid.

I don't want a girlfriend that's a gamer, gaming is something I do for myself, I only have a few friends in real life who actually know I game frequently. But the point im trying to make here, is why would being nice to girls on the internet mean you have a better chance of getting a gaming girlfriend lol?

At the end of the day, people aren't abusing girls because they are girls. They are getting abused because they have upset someone on the internet.

As a female gamer I also have a lot to say on this subject, so I will also try to keep it short.

I completely understand where you guys are coming from about the everyone abusing everyone factor: everyone get abused online, and there is no reason to say one group should get 'less abused'; no one should be abused. Sure its the 'gaming culture'. But culture is created by those in it, and there is no reason it has to be that way.

But the abuse that girl gamers face can be very personal and very direct. It took me about 3 months to even use my mic in Office, because I was too scared. I'm used to using my mic these days, but that doesn't mean its easy. Atleast 3 times a week I get some random yelling at me, calling me a slut, and spamming the mic when i try to use it, telling me girls can't play games, and lots of things I'm not going to repeat here.
If there is ever a DTK member on, that person is instantly votemuted or kicked; but they aren't always there, and if im the only dtk member trying to voteban, it just doesnt work.

Direct, personal, sexual abuse also occurs, from random players to dtk members alike. I have been stalked, I have had people try to hack my account, and I have had people who have badgered me about meeting up for sex. And of course when I say no, then apparently I'm a dumb slut.
Most people muck around and have a good laugh in game, and I'm one of these people. But there needs to be more understanding of where to draw the line, and there needs to be bigger consequences when this line is stepped over.
I have tough skin, but it really does hurt to have people treat you like meat, or single you out simply because you are there.

There is no reason to blow this out of proportion, but it certainly shouldn't be downplayed by those that assume because they don't do it themselves, that it can be ignored or forgotten.
